I am an Associate Professor of Marketing in the Business School. I have been a member of the NTEU for over 25 years, I am also currently a member of Branch Committee. In my time, as a teaching and research academic, I have seen many changes in the university sector. However, nothing compares to the challenges we now face as university staff. As an educator I am also concerned with the impact of staffing cuts and job insecurity on the quality of our teaching. Increased casualization over the years has increased job insecurity for many. Couple that with casual wage theft and we are faced with a situation that is untenable moving forward. As with all members of the NTEU Fightback team I believe now more than ever is the time to continue to stand up for the rights of all workers.
In my time on Branch Committee, I have been actively involved in building, organising and implementing our strike action. I have actively engaged with staff in the Business School helping to build the biggest ever involvement of Business School union members in our strike action. I have listened to staff concerns and along with other members of NTEU Fightback have ensured that these concerns are taken seriously. Most recently we were successful in lobbying to have the national pay claim increased from 12% to 15%, and more importantly our pay claim at USyd to be CPI + 2.5% - a real pay rise. Moving forward, it is vital we continue this action. We cannot allow continued job cuts, increases in workloads and the constant job insecurity faced by staff. The university also needs to provide a culturally safe working environment for our First nations colleagues. Considering rising inflation and the increased cost of living we need a real pay rise, one that exceeds inflation. We all deserve a workplace where our rights are protected. These are the issues I will continue to fight for.
If elected as an active member of the NTEU Fightback team I promise to continue to fight for better job security, workloads and pay, a culturally safe workplace for our First nations colleagues and better working conditions for all staff.
NTEU Fightback is a crew of the staunchest, most dedicated unionists: David Allen, Jeremy Heathcote, Jennifer Huch-Hoogvliet, Nicole MacDougall, Lucy Nicolls, Catherine Sutton-Brady and Alma Torlakovic.
A vote for Fightback is a vote for real action:
● A real pay rise: above inflation
● First nations rights
● Protect 40/40/20 and permanent jobs
● Workplace flexibility and a right to WFH
● Strike to win!
